Don't rain on our parade!

It never rains in Melbourne and as we prepare for our special day (some who've waited 3, 4, 5 or more years...but my Dad says "since I was born"), we look out the window and see dark clouds hovering above, trees swerving and we hear the wind howling.

If it rains, there will be no pretty photos of us on the lawn, we'll greet the Chancellor with messy hair and even possibly slip as we approach the stairs in our heels and long gowns. But of course we're much more co-ordinated than that. We're well prepared and no matter what the weather, we're getting up there and collecting our degrees in style. And we also don't forget to nod at the Chancellor and the Dean before showing off our degrees in pretty blue plastic.

Meeting the Chancellor
Neat hair: Check
Firm handshake: Check
Nods: Check
Yay!

The sky was kind to us. It drizzled slightly while we were outdoors, poured while we were indoors and then stopped when we were back outdoors. So it didn't rain on our parades after all (just during)

The time has finally come

Unfortunately Melbourne Uni follows the Oxford style of ceremonies, and we don't get a graduation hat to throw in the air. As many Asians would know, our parents often say throughout our educations "I can't wait till I see my son / daughter wear the hat."

I just might have to follow in the footsteps of this guy to make daddy happy:

Just kidding ;)

I don't think I have the ability to study an area so intently. Just to give you an idea, here is a list of the areas of study of a few of those conferred their doctorate at the same ceremony:
  • Algebras and rings in Mathematics
  • US anti-abortion movement
  • Operations and maintenance in power plants
  • International food aid regime
I admire their determination and diligence and I can't say the same about myself. So I'll still try...and aim for the hard square hat instead of the soft round one :)
